Zelensky greets “truly fair” agreement with USA

The Ukrainian President greeted on Friday which he considers a « truly fair » agreement with the US about the exploitation of Ukraine’s mineral resources. After months of negotiations.

« The deal has changed significantly during the preparation process. Now it’s a truly fair deal that creates opportunities for significant investments in Ukraine, » said Volodymyr Zelensky.

In the same statements, Zelensky stressed that the document does not provide for Ukraine’s initial debt to the US, as US President Donald Trump initially intended.

The agreement aims to create a background “to invest in Ukraine and make money here” and concerns the extraction of minerals, oil and gas in Ukraine, to which US companies will have access.

The document signed between Washington and Kiev also provides for the creation of an “reconstruction investment fund” of Ukraine, but does not include explicit guarantees of future US military assistance.

According to the US news agency AP, the US intend to access more than 20 Ukraine raw materials considered strategically critical for their interests, including titanium, used in the manufacture of aircraft wings and other aerospace industries, and uranium, which is used in nuclear energy, medical equipment and weapons.

In parallel are diplomatic negotiations to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, triggered by Russia for over three years.
