President Volodimir Zelenski called Vladimir Putin’s initiative to announce a three -day cessation of May 7 to 9 May « Theater production » aimed at creating an atmosphere of Russia’s exit from isolation. Instead, he insisted on a 30-day termination of fire, which was agreed with the United States a few weeks ago.
This happened during an indoor meeting with journalists, quoted by Interfax-Ukrana, to which he added that Ukraine could not give any guarantees for the security of the leaders who were going to Moscow for the parade on May 9th.
The reaction from Russia is very acute, with the ruling in Kyiv being called neo -Nazis. Maria Zakharova, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, and former President Dmitry Medvedev, have threatened that if Ukrainians do something in Moscow on May 9, it will not come to Ukraine May 10.
« The unconditional cessation of fire is the model proposed by the Americans. We follow it. From this or another date-preferably earlier. So let’s try for 30 days. Why is a 30-day cessation of fire? Because it is impossible to agree for anything for three, five, seven days, » Zelenski said.
He also noted that it is impossible to achieve a complete stop of the battles without high quality monitoring.
« This is rather a theatrical production on his part (of Putin). Because in two to three days it is impossible to build some plan for the next steps after the end of the war.
Simply (the proposal) seems neither very serious nor very frivolous. Playing in order to create a comfortable atmosphere for exit Putin from the isolation on May 9 and to feel all comfortable and safe – those leaders, or friends, or partners of Putin who will come, for one reason or another, on the Kremlin square on May 9 – no one will help Putin. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, as the Russians call the Second World War, leaders are gathering in the Russian capital, mostly from friendly states and former Soviet republics.

« Our position is very simple to all countries that have gone or go on May 9: we cannot be responsible for what is happening in the territory of the Russian Federation. They provide you with security, so we will not give you any guarantees. Because we do not know what Russia will do on these dates.

I believe, as a president, and I told this to the Minister of Foreign Affairs that we should tell the people who contact us: « We do not recommend visiting the Russian Federation in terms of (of security, – ed.) And if you do so, don’t ask us. This is your personal decision …
… Ukraine is certainly not responsible for what is happening in Russia today. This is a fact. We are responsible when we are here. In addition, I am sure that other countries apply the same diplomacy with the Russians when they come to us, and as experience shows, we had many different leaders and during their visits there were different types of strikes, attacks and intimidation (from Russia). «
The purpose of Russia’s discontinuation of the fire, both on Easter and May 9, is to test Ukraine’s willingness to find ways to achieve long -term peace, said the Kremlin’s press secretary.
« And of course, we will not wait not ambiguous, but final statements, and most importantly, actions aimed at de -escalation of the conflict during the holidays, » said Dmitry Peskov. According to him, Kiev’s reluctance to « respond directly » to Moscow’s proposal shows that his ideological basis « is neo -Nazism. »
« Who wants guarantees from him? Nothing more than verbal provocation, » Medvedev, a member of the National Security Council with the President, wrote. « The nit realizes that in the event of a real provocation of Victory Day, no one guarantees that in Kiev it will come May 10 ».
