Zelenski has started preparing for elections, writes Economist
Confirmation would mean that both the Ukrainian leader and his colleagues in Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, have changed their minds on whether there are elections (this is also the title of the publication), which otherwise cannot be martialized under Ukraine. Putin demanded a new government under the UN supervision on Friday, and Trump this time defended Zelenski, later talking about the duties on Russian oil if Moscow prevented a truce in Ukraine.
According to this publication, Zelenski convened a meeting last week to instruct his team to organize a vote after a complete termination of fire, which (according to the US side) could occur at the end of April, if possible – around Easter. The first confirmation of this, as The Economist writes, may come around May 5. This is the deadline for voting for the next extension of military status in the Supreme Rad of Ukraine.
Trump called Zelenski dictator without choices that can lose his country
There can be no election in such a scenario before the beginning of July as required by a 60-day election campaign. According to some media interlocutors, at the same time, the election committee needs at least three months to restore electoral lists in the midst of war.
Disagreement
A high -ranking government source believes that Zelenski will try to catch his rivals unprepared with the July election, hoping that the short term would allow him to run without a rival. He also notes that this will also be beneficial for Ukraine, as a long presidential campaign « will tear apart the country, » the economist continues.
Back to Politics: Trump plays the most dangerous trump in Ukraine
Power and opposition insisted even when Trump and Putin joined the election request (and Trump called Zelenski « dictator ») that a vote during war was a huge challenge. The test will be the vote of millions of Ukrainians abroad or in occupied territories (measures surrounding this, such as using a special mobile application, raise questions about transparency). Such a vote – moreover, would take place in the conditions of wartime censorship.
If Poroshenko did not talk about elections then, then « economist » quotes him by saying that the vote could take place « at any moment from August to October », and the campaign in practice began with the sanctions imposed on him in February (perhaps because of his trip to America in the same month). According to him, this decision was to get him out of the game and to serve as a warning to the former commander -in -chief, today ambassador to London, Valerie Sauses. |
Olexi Goncharenko, Opposition: For Ukraine, the minimum guarantee is a direct military treaty with the United States
Trump and Putin may no longer agree
« Two months ago, it was believed that Zelenski was firmly against the election, » but the break with Trump and the attitude towards him in the White House fought his rating. According to the publication, this is also indicated by a poll by The Economist. It seems that the change in his favor has influenced his opinion.
Trump and Putin may no longer want a quick election: they both insisted on them, thinking that Zelenski would fall out of power, « economist » continues.
Moscow and Washington may not stand indifferent while Zelenski makes its way to a second term. At the same time, if Putin’s missiles and drones can make it impossible to cancel the military position, elections would help Putin to destabilize Ukraine even more, even if Zelenski wins.
With a « bad deal » for Ukraine, the truce will be like a vacation
A scout, quoted by the media, predicts that internal instability will be a greater risk for Ukraine in 2025 than the events of the front line. In such a situation, according to him, Russia can harness leaders of the opinion, military and opposition to do the job.
