– What was the Skype gadget?

– More than 20 years ago, Skype really made a revolution in our communication remotely. First of all, because she used a completely different technology. In the past, we usually used a normal connection or wrote letters to call abroad. Skype offered to talk in a voice and later in view.

The revolution was that, unlike the then communication program at that time, Skype was based on our own computers. No longer needed central servers, which significantly cheaper the service. Technology became more accessible because it didn’t require complex, expensive servers somewhere in the world. We have changed directly. And now it’s time to say goodbye to Skype.

– What will replace Skype?

– Specifically, Skype will replace Teams, but like many people, they will use Zoom, WhatsApp or other gadgets. Others will communicate simply by using their phone – modern communication companies allow you to call online. There is no need for separate gadgets – the phone allows you to do it directly, including video calls.

– How much did this technology be revolutionary in 2003?

– Skype basically created competition for communications companies. Millions of people started using this program, with the number of users in a pecuniary time of about 100 million. Everything evolved. Even generations who hate them when they call them – they feel better by writing messages or sending voice messages. Thus, not only technology but also their use habits are changing. This is probably why Skype simply has no space left.

– When did other platforms begin to take over users?

– As many technological innovations happen – more advanced options are emerging and they are not necessarily created by original creators. This happened with Skype. Gradually he lost his acceleration by competing with other products.

For example, in Lithuania, WhatsApp, owned by an American company, now has more users than Skype. Microsoft has invested considerable efforts in Teams, a general communication platform that has become particularly popular through Covid-19 pandemia. Skype was gradually pushed to the side and now Teams is focused not only on the business sector, but also on learning or even personal use. Of course, Teams also has many competitors. Today, when mobile devices allow you to call you online, gadgets become less necessary – you can just call the phone with a picture. It is likely that we will no longer need intermediate programs at all.

– When will the last Skype day be?

– We will finally say goodbye to Skype next week – in the first days of May. I think I don’t really need to be sad – Skype taught us how to communicate remotely as we communicate now. Old technology always changes better.
