Dear grandmother,

Tomorrow we celebrate International Women's Day. As such, I am inspired to write you a few words about the importance of this day, especially here in Portugal. Throughout my life, I witnessed the struggles and achievements of women, and it is essential that we recognize and honor their role in society.
Indeed, a lot has changed (for the better) after April 1974.
Women's Day is not just a date on the calendar; It is a moment to reflect on the achievements that have already been achieved and the challenges that still persist. In Portugal, women have played a crucial role in several areas, from education to politics, and it is admirable to see how they have struggled for equality and respect.
I have always heard reports of women, your generation, who have faced barriers and prejudices, but never stopped fighting for their rights. Today we have the responsibility to continue this fight, ensuring that future generations of women have a fairer and more egalitarian world. It bothers me how there are women performing the same function as men, but with lower salaries…
Each woman is a source of strength and inspiration. They are mothers, daughters, professionals and leaders, and deserve to be celebrated not only today but every day. May we always support and value women in our lives, recognizing their importance and contributing to a future where everyone has the same opportunities.
Will we ever have a woman to the President of the Republic or Prime Minister?
Our generations fought for equality. However, from what I see daily, I think we are entering a setback. I fear for what is to come.
Grandfather Ruy de Carvalho's birthday party was unforgettable. He also had a great woman by his side, with whom he lived an eternal love.
The woman's place is where she wants to be!

Dear grandson,

As you know, I've always been friends with many actors. Ruy de Carvalho, who has just celebrated 98 years and still active, even says « we are childhood friends. » To soon add « of hers, of course ». Indeed, I was a child when I met him.
Ruy thought me funny and started talking to me. And I took me very seriously!
I always remember something he said to me, « If you see me to do something bad, tell me right away! »
And that's it: there was a friendship (with him and his family) for a lifetime.
Ruth was a great woman. When Ruy received the globe from another in 2023, it was to her that she dedicated him.
Women's stories are often stories of courage and determination. And that's exactly what I want to share with you.
Amália Rodrigues, for example, was not only an extraordinary singer, but also a woman who brought the soul from fado to the world. Her voice and passion for music have touched the hearts of many, and she showed that art can be a powerful form of expression and resistance.
Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo, was the first (and only) woman to hold the position of Prime Minister in Portugal. He fought for gender equality and women's rights, showing that women can and should be in leadership positions.
And we can't forget Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, one of the greatest Portuguese poets. She believed that words have the power to transform reality, and this is something we should always remember.
These women, among many others, have shown that female strength is immense and that each of us has an important role to play.
The history of women is a story of struggle, but also of love and solidarity. And I'm sure you will make a difference in the world too.
