The 33-year-old woman who killed her ex-boyfriend on New Year’s Day this year has received euthanasia. The investigation into the facts was still full. The victim’s family responds. « My brother did not earn this. »
The body of Nicolaas V. (36) was found on January 1 this year in his apartment along Granietstraat in Emelgem. Although there were no traces of violence, his ex-girlfriend was arrested that same day on suspicion of murder. Sien M. (33) lived in the same building as Nicolaas V. and they still had a good bond.
The circumstances of the death of V. have never been fully clarified, but more than probably the man wanted to get out of life and he was helped by his ex. Both had a history of psychological problems.
Inclusion in psychiatry
For that reason, Sien M. was released on 11 March under certain conditions. She was only in custody for three and a half months, unusually short for a murder suspect. The cause of her release was her urgent need for psychological care. According to her lawyers Filip De Reuse and Suzy Cooleman, it was clear to everyone that she did not belong in prison but needed help.
After her release, she was immediately admitted to a psychiatric institution. From there, however, she was transferred to the palliative department of UZ Gent where she received euthanasia earlier this week. Her death came as a total surprise for her lawyers.
Many questions
« We had less contact since her release, » says lawyer Suzy Cooleman. « We knew that there was already a procedure for euthanasia for the facts, but afterwards we have never been involved again. »
« I can only say that we were not aware of euthanasia and we have many questions about this, » adds Master Filip de Reuse.
Where is the judiciary?
The relatives of Nicolaas V., who did not want to respond before, now break their silence. « My brother has abandoned her for years, » says a victim’s sister. « She has mistreated and killed him, and she will never be punished for that now. »
« She had two faces and much power over my brother. He didn’t earn this. He was so sweet and helpful, my best friend and the best Peter of my children. He was part of our family and we miss him very much. It is unfair and absolute madness that has happened now. Where is justice in Belgium? » (Jof/BFR)
