Anita Martens (85) from Zulte fell victim to internet scamters last weekend. She lost thousands of euros of savings and unsuspectingly gave her laptop, mobile and some jewelry. « I still can’t get why I did that, » sighs Anita. « I especially want to warn others so that the same does not happen to them. »

Phishing remains a big problem in our country. Internet criminals focus on mainly older people and try to steal their bank details in every possible way. Anita (85) is just one of many victims who was misled.

Last Saturday she received a phone from a man who occurred as a bank employee and kept her working for hours. « He spoke perfectly Dutch and said that my money was suddenly in Spain, » Anita begins. « I had to open my bank application and do everything with my bank card and card reader. »

Cash and jewelry

« He kept talking and talking, I couldn’t get a word in between. I didn’t understand it all well. Until a few years ago I did my banking affairs myself, but I am too old for that now. I check my bill again, but my children help me with transfers. »

« The man on the phone also said they would need my cell phone, computer and bank card and asked if I had cash or jewelry in the house. They would come and pick it up in a safe. Suddenly he said that someone would come to the door within five minutes, and that also happened. They must have been around. »

Numb

« That man at the door did not say a word and did not come in either, I just gave him everything that other man said on the phone. In addition to my computer and mobile, that was also about 400 euros cash and some jewelry. »

« I still can’t get why I did all of that. That man kept on the phone but rattling, I was exactly stunned. Only when my daughter came by the next day and I told what had happened, she said I had been scammed. It is still difficult for me, normally I never do such things. »

7,450 euros

« I often receive suspicious emails or phone calls from abroad, sometimes ten a day. I know that things like this sometimes happen, but you never think it will happen to you. That’s why I want to warn others and I hope that the same thing happens to the same thing. »

Anita’s daughter immediately blocked her bills, but in the meantime evil had happened. In addition to the things she gave the scammer, 7,450 euros also disappeared from her account. The police are investigating the case.
