With garlic and wooden pock against bite -like vampires

They are back on the screen, the bloodthirsty vampires. Gone are the time of the romantic night figures that sparkle in the sunlight (« Twilight »), the intellectual bites (« Only Lovers Left Alive ») or sweet cartotick -ote (« Hotel Transylvania »): Currently the mythological figures mend an uninhibited again, recently in « Abigail » and « Nosferatu ». And now also in « Sinners », the new work by director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler.

Jordan again

Coogler seems to have eaten a fool of Michael B. Jordan. The 38-year-old US actor can now be seen for the fourth time in one of his direction after « Fruitvale Station », « Creed » and « Black Panther ». And in a two-way execution: Jordan slips into the role of the twins Smoke and Stack, which it drove back to her home from Mississippi in 1932, where racial segregation belongs to everyday life and the KU-Klux-Klan continues to be up to mischief.

With many dollars and alcohol in their luggage, the brothers want to open a Juke bar and they can do this within a day: the musicians for the evening, their talented cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) and the experienced slim (Delroy Lindo), are quickly found, the location acquired just before fills up quickly. The blues quickly drives the mood to the utmost, the shop boils. But it lurks at night … in the form of three white musicians.

You want to get access to the bar and even give a song for the best. But bouncer Cornbread (Omar Benson Miller), the twins and their friends have an untrue feeling. They reject the offer to perform in front of the crowd, although leader Remmick (Jack O’Connell) delivers convincing arguments.

Mary (convincing: Hailee Steinfeld), Stack’s former lover, still wants to throw a testing eye on the three uncharged visitors and becomes the first victim of the trio that turns out to be a vampire group. The Juke-Bar becomes a trap. But if you leave the barn, you will become a vampire yourself. So what to do? The survivors have to face the struggle for life and death and finally use the well -known means.

Blood orgy and blues

Yes, it is almost refreshing: the vampires can still be killed in Ryan Coogler’s latest work, which can be classified somewhere between the southern drama, splatter comedy and horror film. A wood -plock is sufficient, and the problem is done. Even garlic, silver and sunlight damage the undead.

But « Sinners » is by no means a traditional vampire film: the bloodthirsty biter are not the focus of history. The approximately 100 million euro work also tells of racial conflicts in the USA, great dreams, family conflicts and the severe legacy of the black population. And last but not least, also of music that is of great importance here. The blues reflects the suffering and life of the black population and also creates a connection to previous and subsequent generations in a rousing scene.

But not only blues sounds out of the cinema boxes: the Swede Ludwig Göransson, who was rewarded with an Oscar for the « Black Panther » and for the « Oppenheimer » soundtrack, created the right sounds that always use the music of later epochs. In addition to sacred melodies, even synthesizer sounds can accompany a struggle between humans and vampire.

Ryan Coogler, who, according to his own statements in films such as « No Country for Old Men », « Fargo » and « The Faculty », found inspiration, left the figures enough in the script to develop, but he does not let his audience look into the soul of the characters. Fortunately.

And towards the end of the film there is also no time for this: While « Sinners » is slowly and with a strong pinch of humor still introduces figure for figure, the film develops into a tension -charged action fireworks in the struggle of Gut against evil in the course of more than two hours.
