Friday, the 13th: Why should the day bring misfortune?
The superstition that Friday, the 13th is an accident day, is made up of two factors: the number 13 and the day on Friday. Both are associated with something negative in popular belief.
To date, the twelve system plays an outstanding role in many companies: every day is divided into two times twelve hours, every year has twelve months. There are twelve zodiac signs. Jesus gathered twelve apostles. And a dozen is a unit of measurement that is often used to this day. The number 13 exceeds this closed system and is only divisible as a prime number by one and itself without the rest. For a long time, the 13 in German vernacular was also called « the dozen of the devil ».
Friday has a similarly bad reputation that is primarily derived from Christianity: Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday, his death is mourned on Good Friday. Beleeizing Christians still regularly provide a Friday victim to commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on this day of the week.
For a long time, Friday and the number 13 were not combined with each other for a « super accident day ». Only since the beginning of the 20th century is Friday, the 13th.
How often is Friday, the 13th?
In every calendar year there are at least one Friday and a maximum of three fronights that fall on a 13th. The long -term distance between two Freise, which falls on a 13th, is 14 months or 61 weeks.

In addition, the Munich auto club evaluated accidents that show that on Friday, the 13th, there are not more accidents. « Superstition, bad premonitions or fears around Friday, the 13th, are – at least as far as the number of traffic accidents concerned – unfounded », » the ADAC sums up on its side.
Friday is distributed over the year, however, the most accident -prone day of the week. The reason for this is the stronger traffic: weekend commuters make their way home, holidaymakers start vacation and often alcohol is also involved when drivers want to go home after celebrating.
Is there an inventor of this alleged unlucky day?
It is not quite clear where the fear of Friday, the 13th comes from. One of the first events that fell on Friday, 13th, took place in 1307. At that time, King Philipp IV ruled in France. In October of that year he ordered all members of the Templar order in Paris, which ultimately led to the abolition of the order. The last grand master of the Knights of Temple, Jacques de Molay, is said to have been burned at the stake on a Friday, the 13th. Nevertheless, this tragic event is not seen as the origin of the superstition around Friday, 13th. Because written mentions of a Friday, the 13th as an accident day, cannot be found for a long time after 1307.
It was not until 1907 that the 13th was mentioned again as the day of the accident. This year, the American Thomas William Lawson, who had become a multimillionaire through stock exchange speculations, wrote the « Friday the 13th » stock exchange novel. In the same year he appeared as « Friday the 13th » also in Germany. The book is about a Wall Street broker who wants to ruin a company and therefore triggers a course slip on Friday. Although he reaches his goal, this does the act at the same time.
The perception of a Friday, the 13th as an accident day grew in Germany in 1916 when the film « Friday the 13th » of director Richard Oswald came into the cinemas. This deals with a family whose members always mysteriously die on this date.
The superstition was continued in 1944 by the comedy « Friday the 13th » by director Erich Engels.
