Depending on how intensely you kiss, up to 146 muscles are activated – 34 of which are only on the face. But also the neck, shoulders and back muscles are used. This small training session for facial expressions also has visible effects. Because the skin is better supplied with blood, it stays taut longer, the lips look fuller and the face overall rosier.

In the event of a tongue kiss, the kisses exchange around 80 million bacteria within just ten seconds. That doesn’t sound particularly appetizing and romantic, but it is a perfect training for our body’s defense system. Because: Our body learns to recognize foreign pathogens and form the right antibodies. So if you kiss more often, you are probably not so susceptible to infections.

In a Dutch study, this effect was detected in 2023. Couples who loved several times a day showed a significantly more active immune defense against respiratory infections compared to those couples who rarely kissed.

The researchers therefore suspect that the daily exchange of bacteria acts like a kind of natural vaccination. And the whole thing with the advantage that it is also fun.

Kisses keeps fit

Depending on how passionate you kiss, you burn a lot of energy with this pleasure: up to 20 calories per minute. This corresponds approximately to what you would also consume when walking. A wild smooch can almost go through as a training session. Small snacks can therefore be kisses away – and also with pleasure.

And: The heart beats faster in romantic kisses, and the respiratory rate also increases and the blood vessels widen. This has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. The blood circulation improves, blood pressure regulates, even the risk of heart attacks decreases in loving relationships, such as several long -term studies suggest.

Kissing also promotes emotional fitness, because those who get into another person strengthens their ability for empathy, closeness and social bonds. Kisses can also help with fears. The hormone oxytocin has a calming effect and conveys security. You feel safe, let go of anxiety.

Kissing more often for health

Whether greeting as a small gesture in everyday life or to express his love: kissing is very powerful. It protects us, makes a bit more beautiful, consolidates our relationships and ensures more joie de vivre.

Those who smooch every day train not only their facial muscles, but also their heart – figuratively and in the medical sense. So maybe encourage partners more often: come, kiss me, that keeps us healthy!
