Who will propose new members?

The Finnmark Commission will get a new member after Ole Henrik Magga. Magga is one of two who represented the people of Finnmark and will be replaced with the same.

The Finnmark property (FeFo) is governed equal by representatives from Finnmark county council and the Sami Parliament. (§7) The Finnmark Commission has its origin from the ‘Finnmark Act §§5 & 29’ which will investigate the rights of land and water in Finnmark for Sami and others.

Therefore, it is unfortunate that the government has been on a practice where the new member will be appointed by the King in the Cabinet of Ministers, on the basis of proposals only from the Sami Parliament.

The Sami Parliament’s proposal will be submitted to Finnmark county council for a statement before the appointment, according to a letter from the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Management to the Sami Parliament. (Sagat 10 April 2025) The §29 king appoints the members of the Finnmark Commission.

– The Finnmark Commission will consist of a leader and four other members. The leader shall fulfill the requirements of the Court Act to Supreme Court judges. – Two of the other members will meet the requirements for district court judges. – At least two members must be resident in or otherwise have a strong connection to Finnmark.
