Nick UT and Kim Fuk met Pope Frank 2022. Years to celebrate 50. Anniversary « Napalm Girl »

Naked girl, together with other children, running a great pain, after sprinkling with napalm.

Designing the scenes of war in Vietnam, « Napalm Girl » was a source of pride and aspirations of Vietnamese photo reporters.

Her author, Nik Ut, became the first and only photographer born in Vietnam, who received the Pulicer’s award.

« Nick Ut was Messiah, » said the Vietnamese photographer who wanted to stay anonymous.

Valenced as a « teacher », UT often comes to gender land and was a mentor with entire generations of Vietnamese photo reporters.

More than half a century later, authorship over this legendary image was questioned in the new documentary called Stringerwhich had Prime Minister at the Santenens Film Festival in January.

With the help of modern technology, the documentary stated a bombastic charge, claiming that the picture was actually made by Nguenna Tan NGE, the frilener photographer who is 87 years old.

After the documentary, the World Press Photo (VPP) has launched an investigation and decided to suspend the attribution of the image by UTU, which led to a deep gap in the Photo Reporter Community.

« To overthrow the hero, the legendary personality, you must have enough convincing evidence, » said the second Vietnam Photo Reporter for the BBC.

In digital age, « rarity » is that one picture has so much influence, he added.

« We need to be careful, we must not allow the controversy to harm the legacy of such important photos – or inflict more pain among people. »

The authenticity of the photo is not questioned, but the controversy soon began to be very absorbed, because the name of the photographer « part of the historical record », said Kit Greenwood, an associate professor of photo journalism at the University of Missouri.

« The war has a complicated story, and still can awaken strong feelings. It is understandable that bringing such photography in question challenges such feelings, » he said.

Photography

The legendary photo was created as the South Vietnam air forces launched an attack by an attack, which was hit by the Omash by the village of Trang Bang 8. June 1972. Years.

Kim Fuk, the photo protagonist, played with brother and relatives in the temple courtyard.

UT worked for the as well as the as well as possible.

He said that after the explosion, the villagers ran along the nearby highway.

Since he took a grandmother with a dying child in his arms, he saw Fuk run with his arms raised.

He ran towards her to make photos until he saw her skin began to peel off.

Then he poured water everywhere on her body and drove the children to the hospital.

Before digital photo appliances, photographers, including staff and Frilensers, had to take movies to the office.

The editor of the dark chamber would write authorship and developed movies.

The chief of photography would then decide which photos are sent to the seat.

« When I returned to the office, I shouted, ‘I have one very special photo!’ Everyone turned to look, « he told the UT for the BBC in January.

UT said that in the camera was only the editor of the Dark Chamber of Juiča « Jackson » Ishizaki, so UT stood behind Ishizaki while this developed film.

Ishizaki then marked the film with Utova name and took the picture into the main room.

« Everyone saw the photo and someone invited my boss, the chief for the photo of Horst Fas, to return from the handle immediately, » Ut said.

According to Ut, FAS arrived before the photo editor Karl Robinson and they argued about whether they send a photograph to the seat at all.

Robinson, who was in charge of printing the image signatures, was considered inappropriate because she contained boss.

He was in the end supervised.

However, Robinson told a drastically different version of the event for the BBC.

He said that after lunch in the dark chamber, he found only an Ichizaki and a technician.

According to Robinson, the films were already developed and exposed to browsing.

There were two images of the same scene, one from the side corner and one directly in the different rolls that submitted two different photographers.

Robinson saw an unknown name written in the registry because that Frilerer did not work regularly for the AP.

« We had the whole company of Vietnamese Stringers. They could be civilians or sometimes soldiers needed extra earnings, » he said.

Robinson said FAS returned later and did not dispute the quarrel about which photo to send.

However, he insists that UT was not present during the photo selection process.

« He wasn’t standing in front of the door waiting for any decision. »

While Robinson printed the signature of the image, claimed, FAS leaned by him and whispered to his ear to attribute to the UTU, regularly employed in AP.

« I didn’t have the courage to oppose because I wanted to stay in Saigon with Vietnam’s wife and two small children. »

Both FAS and Ichizaki have died in the meantime.

Robinson’s conscience in the coming decades did not remain clean.

He wanted to get out the photographer, but he didn’t remember his name.

With the help of former colleague from AP, he was 2015. found Nge’s name, but he failed to locate it.

Seven years later, UT and Kim met with Pope Francis to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the photo.

« In the end, I broke me to have to face all the team. I couldn’t turn away and I try to forget about it. »

Robinson addressed the fellow Photo Reporter Geria to the latest, who agreed to interview him, which started working on Stringer.

Shortly after that, the team found Ngea, who moved to the United States as a refugee after the fall of Saigon, but returned to Gender Earth in 2002. years.

« I was silent, without a voice, nervous and attacked, those were all deeply suppressed emotions.

« Nothing is more important than the truth, » NGE said.

Investigations

When he learned that the documentary was recorded, the AP launched his own investigation based on available shots, interviews with still live eyewitnesses and inspections of Utova’s photo apparatus.

He published two reports in January and Maja, and concluded that there was no « definitive evidence » that would justify the seizure of OTA.

However, the news agency admitted that some « big questions » remain unanswered.

The AP said that « very likely » that the image was created on the PENTAX photo apparatus – which is contrary to the issue of events.

He was still saying that there was four apparatuses with him – two Leika and two Nikon and that he used Leika to make that picture.

When he questioned him, UT said he did not pay attention to the model, and FAS told him that the image came from the roll caused to Leiki.

On that day, NGE was painted with the apparatus in the hands that looks like a pentax.

Both the documentary and AP have tried to reconstruct the time of events based on existing video materials, photos and satellite shots.

Video materials recorded shortly after the « napalm girl » was caused by a blurred figure, which is believed to be UT, as it is quite far from children.

The documentary claims that UT was 60 meters away from the video camera, which means he had to run as soon as he made a photo.

The AP refuted that figure, assessing the distance at 28.8 to 48 meters, with 20 percent of the possibility of error.

He argued that the distance variables could influence various variables and that the documentary also ignored some other recordings and did not have an insight into two sets of images that used this one in his own investigation.

Where are we now?

And AP and VPP claim that they cannot determine the identity of the photographer – VPP even suggested that the photo could have made a third photographer.

And yet a few questions about the documentary version of the documentary remains open: several journalists from the place of the place rejected the event version presented in the film as unfounded and refused to participate in recording.

And what about the developed photo?

NGE said the FAS gave him an instance, but that his wife bug him at the moment of great dissatisfaction.

UT claims that he is a legal author of the photo and plans to file a lawsuit for defamation.

« People naturally want to find out the truth behind the photo, » the first unnamed Vietnamese photographer said.

« We need more time and evidence to find out what really happened. »

No one doubts the strength he owns « Napalm Girl », all these decades as it was created, but the accusations in relation to her origin added to all another shade of mystery.
