The chances are good that one or the other form of a weather report will be consulted for these questions. Be it according to the news on TV, via weather services on the Internet or via a weather app. But now imagine that you can't just check whether you need the thick winter jacket again today or not. Or whether the hike should be better moved because of the storm warning. A life in meteorological blind flight. Somehow stupid, right?

Such a blind flight is currently in the USA. There the wave of termination in authorities also met the weather and oceanography authority (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA for short). More than one in ten employees had to go.

This is not only stupid, it could have catastrophic effects. Noaa is not just the main weather service in the USA. The authority is also responsible for hurricane forecasts that are responsible for the associated warning systems and other extreme weather. It has a deep -sea research program that laid the foundation for many medical milestones, such as the replication of DNA in the laboratory. It delivers sea data that are essential for shipping and fishing. Not to forget the many climate scientists who research the future of this planet.

The chances are good that Europe will also feel the loss of hundreds of NOAA experts. Did you know, for example, that the weather app of the iPhone also uses American data? Now you advise you where these come from. Somehow stupid? Oh, who is already interested in the weather.
