« Who has the most political experience » must be president, says Marques Mendes

Marques Mendes defended on Tuesday that the position of President of the Republic « must be exercised by those who have the most political experience », only in this way « is not a vote in the unknown or a shot in the dark, » he said.

The former PSD leader stated that the position of Head of State is “eminently political”, in the closing speech of the presentation of the Honor Commission of his candidacy,

« Everyone can, of course, apply. This is not what is in question. But the Portuguese is responsible for evaluating. And from the outset this should be paid. The more political position in the state structure in Portugal must also be exercised by democracy by those who have the most political experience. None of this is corporate. All this is common sense, » he said.

The presidential candidate considers that the more than 20 years in public office and more than 10 of television comment allowed voters to know him “very well”, from their political thinking to their defects.

« It’s not even a vote in the unknown, no shot in the dark, » but a « vote in experience, » he said, stressing that his political experience brings « security, predictability and confidence. »

Regarding the proposal for constitutional revision, Marques Mendes stated that this is not necessary to reduce the number of deputies. « Just courage to fulfill the previous revision, » he said.

He also took advantage of his intervention to thank PSD for his candidacy, but recalled that he values his independence and promised that he will compliment when making sense and criticized when decisions so demand it. « I will always act like this in the Presidency of the Republic. With exemption, impartiality and independence. In line with the tradition of all presidents of the Republic to this day, » added Marques Mendes.
