WHERE OF International Olympiads in Mathematics Bronislav Shatil: Artificial intelligence prevents students from developing

The Bronislav Shatil, who is finishing the 12th grade in the Narva Language Lyceum, winning at the Republican Olympiads in mathematics, showing excellent results and at the international level, does not want to devote his life to this very accurate science. I decided to become a doctor, not yet deciding which one, planning, having received a specialty, to continue his life in Tartu.

Father gave the base and push

Bronislav began to comprehend the mathematics thoroughly, ahead of the school curriculum, going beyond its framework, still being a primary school student, thanks to the mentoring of the father – Ivan. The one, a programmer, without the Olympiad past, but with excellent mathematical knowledge, relying on Lomonosov’s “Mathematics, the mind puts in order”, gave his son, say, a base, an impetus for the development of a special interest in the subject.

Bronislav took prize diplomas at the republican mathematics Olympiads from the 6th grade, but says that a qualitative leap occurred by the end of the main school. It should be noted, first of all, that many participants receive diplomas of three degrees at any Olympiad, that is, winners – not three schoolchildren on three steps of the podium.

In the last grade of the main school, Shatil earned the right to speak at the Olympics in Norway. There was awarded a bronze medal.

“This was the first bronze medal brought to Estonia by a ninth grader. Before that, only Estonian gymnasium students, students of tenth grades and older, rose so high, ”said Bronislav.

In the 10th grade, he brought bronze from Japan. One point was not enough for silver.

The task was difficult due to unprecedented simplicity

Last year, a scandal occurred at the Olympics in the UK. Young mathematicians faced an abnormally simple task, which actually became the most difficult.

“Even the Chinese team, which, of course, was the strongest (the Chinese as a whole has an incredible level of training, and they are always in the leaders), ended up in the flight. One of the tasks was so easy that the participants simply could not believe that this was possible, were looking for non -obvious decisions, making a dead end, making mistakes. This happened to me. Then, half -joking, the international mathematical jury apologized that such an inappropriate level was among the tasks, ”says the Narva mathematician.

– So what was there to apologize for if the task was virtually complicated, also requiring special psychological preparation?

– Yes, I have already heard such a point of view, but we must understand that athletes come to the main competitions in the world, expecting that they will be required to fulfill the highest level standards, rely on the experience of previous Olympiads, and the quality of tasks on them. There was something that could not happen, according to the traditional format, criteria. Although, in general, of course, a controversial moment. But so I was left without a bronze medal. The score was not enough, ”recalls Bronislav.

This summer he will go to his final international mathematical Olympiad – to Australia. Shatil, of course, hopes not only for bronze.
For four years now, the title of absolute champions of Estonia in mathematics went to Narva. Two times – Bronislav Chatel, and two – to Alexei Ganyukov, who has already completed the Pylamyaian gymnasium.

For his successes in mathematics, Bronislav is grateful to all teachers: the language lyceum as a whole and, of course, Alexander Vasilievich Sutyrin, with whom he has been familiar with 8 years and with whom he continues to solve problems, train, already on equal terms, of course. Rustam Novikov, a very famous Narva Olympiad, also provides immense assistance in preparation.

« The doctor also has to solve complex problems »
– Where will you study further? Devote yourself to mathematics?

– No, I will go to Tartu for a medical one.
– Why not mathematics?

– I want to become a doctor, this is what I see the prospects for development. This is a thoughtful decision. It must also be understood that the Olympiad mathematics is quite far from the academic, since the competitive factor in it stands, of course, in the first place. That is, in mathematics as a big comprehensive science, I’m not as strong as it might seem. And the doctor also has to solve complex problems, which is interesting to me.
– What kind of doctor do you want to become?

– The first six years will be general -medical training, and during this time, having learned a lot, having tried on myself, I will decide what specialization I will choose for the last stage of training. It is stupid to guess 6 years in advance.

« Learing only at Estonian, I would not achieve such success »

Bronislava has yet to pass the state examination in mathematics in the gymnasium, and surrendered in English and Estonia back in November. The latter is on C1.
– How do you feel in Estonian? Still, it is necessary to study on it with medicine, complex science, with its huge vocabulary.

– Absolutely confident. I have no difficulties in any situations. Here, again, many thanks to the language lyceum.
– What do you think about the complete transition to the Estonian language? Would you be able to achieve your success in mathematics, studying only in Estonian?

– I think that if I studied exclusively in Estonian, the results would be many times worse. The native language, which is constantly used, adds opportunities, and the abandonment of it in the educational process turns into stress for all participants, so far, in any case. I have non-reasonable fears that the successes of the Narvytsy at the Olympiads may remain in the past due to a decrease in the level of knowledge.

« Artificial intelligence is harmful to training »
– Now schoolchildren are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI), in particular Chat GPT, to complete school tasks of any kind, and even on state exams, it happens only on it, like a cheat sheet. If AI has already entered our lives, then does the education system need to adapt to it, rely on it for granted?

– In my life I have never used any artificial intelligence, that is, in this particular case, I am more likely an exception to the rules. I am firmly convinced that a person should try to do everything himself, especially in the learning process, as this is unusually useful for the development of the brain. AI threatens to create a situation where a person does not have to think at all. This moves us into the abyss, since the quality of working personnel in all areas can drop sharply – as independent units they will be little to represent. I am for restrictions on the use of AI at school, in universities, other educational institutions, for restrictions on the use of smartphones in them. I do not believe in the well -being of a society in which everything is robotic; The main question is what humanity is to occupy. A person should work.

Is not going to return to Narva
– You do not see the point of going to study abroad, but will you return to Narva after studying in Tartu?

– We will be objective – Narva at this stage develops very poorly, if not more, while Tartu and Tallinn went far ahead.
I want my future family, children have more opportunities, and with all the love of Narva, and this is my favorite city, I can hardly choose it, although it can, of course, be formed as you like. Perhaps over the years everything will change radically for the better, but so far I do not see such prospects in my hometown.
