The EU Commission actually planned the abolition for 2021. But that failed because the states could not agree on whether the long-term summer or winter time should apply.

Convert: Since when and why has there been a time change in Germany?

Change o’clock when and why? During the first and the Second World War there was already a change from winter to summer time in Germany, which, however, did not follow a clear scheme. The renewed – and permanent – introduction of a change between summer and winter was decided in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1978, but only came into force in 1980. One reason was the desire to adapt to the Western neighboring countries that had already introduced summer time in 1977 for energy policy reasons. Another reason was the fact that the FRG and GDR had to agree on the introduction of summer time so that Germany and especially Berlin did not divided in time.

In 1996 the clock change was unified across the EU, since then people in all EU countries will have one hour back on the last Sunday in March and on the last October Sunday. And why the whole thing? Actually, daily light should be used better by changing the time and thus saved energy. However, the actual benefit is controversial.
