When the political class undermines confidence in our institutions – Liberation
The widespread reaction of the political class after the announcement of the sentences incurred by Marine Le Pen is particularly worrying. On the one hand, because the « Bashing judge« Already practiced for a long time by the RN and LFI – relayed by the media of the Bolloré sphere – seriously affected confidence in our institutions, especially judicial.
On the other hand, because the opposition of the political world to the sentence of immediate ineligibility reinforces the idea of a political caste decided to remain above the laws which it itself adopted, further aggravating the distrust of citizens towards their representatives. According to the CEVIPOF barometer of March 2025, only 24 % of French people declare to trust the National Assembly, a historically low figure and one of the lowest in Europe.
Confidence – towards others, our institutions or our representatives – is a precious good that constitutes the base of social harmony. Literature in human and social sciences has largely demonstrated that confidence facilitates exchanges, growth and collective well-being. It also plays a decisive role in electoral participation, thus conditioning the representativeness of citizens and the quality of democratic functioning.
