Peter and Paul take place every year on June 29th. In 2025 the weekday is a Sunday. The fact that the high festival takes place on this day is due to the policy of the Roman emperor Valerian: In the course of the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire in 257 AD, this had ordered the veneration of the apostles Peter and Paul to prevent their graves. The relics were then spent on June 29th in the Sebastians catacomb, where they were worshiped further.
The oldest celebration of the festival is dated 354 NC, in the 6th century the apostle festival was adopted in a preform of today’s festival from Constantinople. The importance of Peter and Paul for the Eastern Churches can be seen today from the fact that the holiday on June 29, 2020 marks the end of the apostle fasting, which begins a week after Pentecost. Many Catholic dioceses traditionally celebrate the ordination at the high festival Peter and Paul.

Until the 19th century, the Peter and Paul Festival was a holiday in many German countries. Today, no German state commits the apostle festival as a legal holiday. However, employees and students can apply for exemption if they want to take part in the celebrations of their denomination for religious reasons.

As well as other church festivals, there are many peasant rules around Peter and Paul that show the importance of the festival in the year of farmers. Since the harvest of many fruits and grain is due from late June, the rules refer to the importance of good weather. In many Bavarian and Austrian communities, a big fire is lit to Peter and Paul and a « Peter » doll is burned. There is no traditional reason to burn the straw doll. The so -called Peterlfeuer are a variant of the St. John’s fire in the night to St. John’s Day.
