What to read? Books about the sea

The sea is not just water. This is a call, memory, hope, an abyss. Each of us has our own « sea » – real or imaginary. In literature, it sounds differently: anxious, romantic, menacing or liberation. The Narva Central Library will introduce you to books in which the sea becomes a full -fledged hero.

Morten Andreas Strexnes “Times of the Sea, or as we caught a combined shark with a takushenka inflatable boat”

“Times of the sea” is an amazing alloy of the psychological novel-travel and adventure prose with elements of the family saga. The story of the pursuit of the huge Greenland shark in the waters of Norway, echoing with the “moby wild” Melville and the “old man and the sea” Hemingway, amazes and attracts with its intonation, friendly and surprisingly respectful to the sea inhabitants, even if it is a huge and gloomy monster, like a shark. The story about the fishing of the monster is gracefully associated with the memoirs of the two main characters about the fate of their families, with the old legends about the ancient underwater monsters and with professional fishing councils.

William Hoop Hodgson « Pirates-ghosts »

The ocean depths conceal many puzzles and deadly dangers. Powerful whirlpools, terrible shadows and fantastic creatures sometimes appear at the most unexpected moment. And now, a calm swimming is turning around by a real nightmare … The English writer William Hop Hodgson (1877-1918), from a young age associated with the sea, out of his own experience, has expressed what the water element is capable of. This collection includes his novel “Pirates-Graint” and stories on the sea theme. Hodgson’s works later had a great influence on the classics of the mystic and horror genre. “Few can compete with Hodgson,” wrote G.F. Lovecraft – in art as if there are nothing meaningless details or random hints of nameless and monstrous forces that live nearby … «
