What they always wanted to know about wild boars
Again and again there are serious game accidents. How can this be prevented? Interesting facts about dealing with the wild animals.
Only injured wild boars go to dogs and people
Because they wanted to defend themselves, explains the hunter and head of the State Hunting Academy in Rhineland-Palatinate, Christoph Hildebrandt. « Then they bite too. » They could then also serve people and seriously injure them with their razor -sharp corner teeth.
In the city they are particularly dangerous for cyclists
They are another danger for two -wheelers. « If you suddenly run on the street in the city, that’s dangerous for cyclists, » says Hildebrandt. And the animals can weigh up to 150 kilograms.
Wild boars should not be fed in the city, Wildbiologist Ulf Hohmann warns. « This arouses expectations and quickly leads to misunderstandings. »

Usually wild boars withdraw
« If the animals are not injured, they are more likely to withdraw, » emphasizes professional hunter Hildebrandt. This also applies if the streams had offspring. « These are false attacks when they have young. » Wildbiologist Hohmann therefore says when asked how to behave when encountering a wild boar: « The sight of such a beautiful wild animal. »
Calling and looking for protection at table height if necessary
With loud calls and clapping, the animals, including all of the rotting, could usually be passed away, says Hildebrandt. In the case of attacking, injured animals, rich table height to get to safety. « You can’t climb. »
In the event of a game accident, brake and hold the steering wheel
This is Hildebrandt’s tip when a wild boar runs into the car. Dodging is too dangerous. After the accident, the drivers would have to stay on site, communicate the police and wait until the police or a hunter commissioned by them come. With his dog, the hunter will try to find the injured animal quickly and save him a painful death.

The German automotive club traffic warns injured and dead animals. The vast majority of cars would have a partial comprehensive insurance, the game accidents with cover. The damage should be documented with the help of photos and witnesses and immediately reported to the insurance company.
Time change and dusk are particularly dangerous
Statistically, there is a game accident every 2.5 hours in Rhineland-Palatinate, but also with deer or other animals, Hildebrandt warns. The danger after the time change is particularly great because the rush hour for the animals changes that would have adapted their food search to the dangers and daylight conditions.
According to the automotive club, most game accidents happen between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The risk increases, especially in spring and autumn, because the life rhythm of the animals is moving due to the changed lighting conditions. This also applies after the time change on March 30th.

There are much more wild boars than before
« Wild boars are omnivores and always know where there is something to eat, » says Wildbiologist Hohmann. Only in large forest areas such as the Palatinate Forest are they still dependent on forest fruits. Otherwise people and agriculture offer them plenty of food all year round.

« The population of wild boar has increased continuously in the past 40 years, » says Hildebrandt. From a weight of 17 kilograms, the animals are sexually mature and they achieved this earlier and earlier because the food was grown.
One reason is the significantly expanded cultivation area for corn. At the same time, bays and oaks, due to climate change, have plenty of booklocks and acorns much more often: the good years with around 1.4 tons per hectare have become much more common. In 2025 such a « mast year » was also to be expected.
Depending on the age, a brook can give birth to between four and eight young people a year. In rare cases or in captivity up to ten years, the omnivores could be up to ten years old. On average, however, it is only two years and rarely became older than three to four years.

Wild boars cause damage to meadows and fields
In addition to the carbohydrate -rich food of acorns and boxers, the wild boars also needed animal protein, says the hunter. « They are looking for grass screens and worms in the grass scars of the meadows. » This leads to vole damage on meadow areas. In summer, the animals would also be targeting the grain rodies and potatoes from the farmers.
Wild boars also run through a city
In cities such as Koblenz or Pirmasens, in which wild boar should not be hunted, they increased more, says Hildebrandt. « You notice that nothing will happen to you there. » In Mainz, too, a wild boar had run through the city and frightened people. However, these also moved closer to the forest with their houses, with it also avoided the wild boars in fences and lodges to rummage through their gardens.

The wild distance grows
Hildebrandt says that more wild boars and progress in technology meant that significantly more animals had been shot in recent years. Hunters have also been shooting with night vision devices for two years and are now traveling with thermal imaging cameras.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, according to the hunting association, almost 60,000 wild boars were processed. That was around 16,000 animals more than in the twelve months before. Of the wild boars processed in Germany, more than eleven percent came from Rhineland-Palatinate, which is one of the most forested federal states.
