Pension reforms in Austria have too bad reputation, says economist Thomas Url. « You think everyone loses something. » In truth, however, you need pension reforms – so that the very good pension system in Austria should be maintained, as he said. On this point, URL also called the other participants of the expert forum on the future of the pension system, initiated by the Federal Council. And so it was then discussed how a pension reform in Austria could be designed sensibly, and how the poverty in old age could also be combated by women.
The purpose of any reasonable pension reform, URL already explained, be it to distribute existing money over a long time. After all, this is the challenge caused by demographic change. And no one wants to pay higher contributions and more government subsidies in the pension system.
The expert saw the expert at the statutory starting age – in order to ensure protection of legitimate expectations, an increase had to happen with enough lead time – and the amount of the account percentage (this multiplies the sum of the contribution bases acquired in one year and credited to the pension account). With the annual pension adjustment, on the other hand, the current calculation mechanism in international comparison is already at the « lower end of the flagpole » to want to save something here, especially in the lower income range, URL explains.
