What money live from after 18 months?

Everyone can get seriously ill. For the people who can no longer work for a long time due to illness, there is the « Congé Maladie » in Luxembourg. This is paid by the employer until the 77th day of illness. From then on, the CNS will take over for another 18 months. But what happens to the employees who are still not able to work again?

In a parliamentary request, Marc Goergen (pirates) wanted to experience exactly that of Health Minister Martine Deprez (CSV). According to the Pirate politician, this deadline of 18 months is problematic. From these it showed that 67.5 percent of the people who exceeded the critical 18 months took a « replacement income »: the majority of those affected (24.3 percent) received a disability pension, 17.4 percent unemployment benefit and 13.8 percent unemployment benefit for people in an « external professional restructuring process » (which can be granted for up to twelve months).

Only 10.3 percent of the people had started a job again and the situation of 16 percent of those affected was not recorded more in more detail, since they were not about local people. Overall, the number of people who are no longer paid for « Domnité Pécuniare de Maladie » increases since 2019. In 2024 alone, 540 people were affected – about 0.1 percent of the working population.
