Only recently, Amy realized she had just a combustion syndrome.
There were warning signs, it was exhausted.
The term « Burnout« Skilled Kristina Maslah a few decades ago, Professor Emeritus Psychology at California University in Berkeley.
It describes it as « chronic stress in the workplace not managed properly. »
It is not a medical condition or diagnosis and cannot be treated, she explains.

There are also financial consequences.

Although combustion syndrome is mainly bound by paid work, researchers are increasingly recorded in students, parents and carers more and more often.
Psychotherapist Dr Claire Flambles points out that women are disproportionately affected by this phenomenon,
« The so-called ‘second shift’, ie unpaid work at home, in a huge extent on the shoulders carry women, » she says.
Spotting the symptoms
In addition to fatigue and exhaustion, experts do to pay attention to two key characters that indicate combustion syndrome – an increasingly cynical attitude towards the work you do and a negative view of yourself.
Dr. Plumbli says you may not even notice such phenomena in your business.
In terms of productivity, he provides examples of teachers prepared by a lecture plan by writing only one note, or an employee not preparing for a meeting or presentation.
Many people dream of escape from everything.
« You may think how to escape, you have fantasies for someone to take your responsibilities.
« I had patients who told me, ‘I’d like to get a corona virus’, » she says.
Five combustion phases
- Honeymoon – During this period, you agree to everything, but ignoring how much time it takes to do something. You take too much obligations and as a result of the stress starts to get a crowd.
- Quit – You start to give up on things that have been important to you before, such as exits or gathering with friends. You lose interest in the activities you used to love. Focusing on work becomes a challenge, and a brain fog can occur.
- Demotional – Permanent irritability goes to apathy. The feeling of alienation can become more pronounced – as if you are not entirely present in one’s own life. There may be a loss of compassion because you no longer have the strength to sympathize with others. In the end, you feel less achieved and you are incompetent.
- Combustion – When the employees reach the combustion phase, they feel completely exhausted, physically and emotionally. You may continue to work, but you will be difficult to maintain a daily routine.
- Complete collapse (closing) – In the final phase, the man can barely get out of bed. The previous generations described this as a « nervous breakdown ». Therapists record cases of people who closed completely – some could not speak or leave the house, while others had serious panic attacks. Recovery can last for months and even for years.
Six factors that increase the risk of combustion
- Workload – feeling of overload, too much work, and too little time or means to do.
- Lack of control – A small degree of autonomy in making daily decisions.
- Insufficient prize and recognition – No recognition or award for a well done work. The feeling that you are a small screw in a large system, without a clear insight into the end result.
- The collapse of the community in the workplace – Lack of support in relations with executives, colleagues, patients, or clients that makes it difficult to solve problems. Work in a toxic environment where there is a risk of psychological abuse and humiliation.
- Lack of fairness – Discrimination, inequality in the workplace or obstacles for advancement, such as « glass ceiling ».
- Conflict – Finding a little sense in business or work in an environment where work ethics is contrary to yours.
Recovery from combustion
The Sabine Vonentag professor explored the ability of employees to mentally separate from work after a hard day.
She discovered that the occurrence of emotional exhaustion and combustion was less than employee who « mentally away from work after they faced high demands. »
Dr. Claire Plambli advises you to find one person you can contact, which « may be able to show you that light at the end of the tunnel ».
It doesn’t have to be a professional face, it can be a friend or colleague.
« Contrary to Ingraded Men, you don’t have to make drastic changes in life, such as leaving work, to successfully recover from burning, » says Dr. Claire Eshley, Author of BooksThe Burnout Doctor).
Advies to focus on three key areas – control over the job you do, your well-being and environment that supports you.
To understand what is within range of your control, Dr. Eshley advises you to do the online exercise Covey’s Sphere of Control, which will help you understand what you can realistically affect.
The exercise asks questions, such as: « If I can’t control or influence this, can I accept that? ».
It quotes the work of Dr. Haris Rasa, who analyzed challenging situations through three possibilities: go, stay and live in accordance with its values, or stay and not be productive.
Although these exercises are made to improve the mental health of people in difficult circumstances, Haris worked much in refugee camps in cooperation with the World Health Organization.
Dr. Eshley says these principles can be applied in any difficult situation, and even for recovery from combustion.
« The fourth phase of recovery from combustion is determining its own values, and it is crucial because any decision you will then bring must be in accordance with these values, » she explains.
