What happens if the current is not in place?
Melkøya – open question to Equinor and project manager for Snow White Future
The electrification of Melkøya is one of the most contentious power projects in Norway. The government has repeatedly promised that the power will be in place by 2030. Still, we still do not know where it will come from, when it comes – or who is actually going to deliver.
Equinor is now investing billions in making the LNG plant at Melkøya electric. This is done on the basis of political promises. But what if the current fails? Then we are left with a serious question: Who takes responsibility?
So what happens if the promises are not kept? Should Equinor benefit from a promise the state failed to deliver – while the community is left with the bill again?
The electrification of Melkøya is sold as a green project. But in reality, it’s about moving emissions on paper. Gas climate emissions do not disappear, they just happen elsewhere.
