What does the letter send Emanuel Macronu in Strasbourg? – Society
Students from Serbia arrived at Strasbourg last night, today they met with the Council of Europe and read an open letter for President of France Emanuel Macrons, which intend to send to his cabinet and the European Council in Brussels.
The open letter of Serb students sent to the macronoma broadcast in full:
Dear President Macron,
We address you as students from Serbia, young people who decided, due to the lack of justice and dialogue in their own country, to bike on the seats of European and international institutions. Our journey, a long more than 1,400 kilometers and called a tour for Strasbourg, is also a symbol and testimony of despair, but also an unwavering hope.
Our mission is simple, but urgently important: draw the attention of the international community at an increasing erosion of democratic values in Serbia. We live in a country where institutions do not protect citizens anymore, but serve the interests of a narrow circle of power. Where the media under pressure, the elections are compromised, and critical thinking marginalized and attacked.
The immediate reason for this protest was a tragedy in Novi Sad – collapsing a canopy at the train station, which took sixteen lives, including children. But real causes lie much deeper: system irresponsibility, corruption and destruction of institutions that used to exist to serve the people. Instead of answering and taking responsibility, citizens encountered silence – and another injustice among many.
That is why I peddam further, carrying a message – Serbia needs support to Europe, but not in the form of protocol meetings and diplomatic smiles. We are not looking for sanctions; We are looking for a view of truth and responsibilities. Because meetings with leaders who do not recognize responsibility towards one’s own people – when maintained without critical reviews – they can be interpreted as a legitimization of authoritarianism.
Mr. President, you often emphasized the importance of European values, freedoms and human rights. Today you have the opportunity to show that these values are really universal. Your support for the truth, justice and freedom in Serbia would mean a lot, not only us, but also a whole generation of young people who want to stay in their country and build is on the foundations of democracy and dignity.
We do not drive towards Europe to escape Serbia. We drive to bring her back.
With deep respect,
Students from Serbia
