Wet snow and mild weather can cause avalanche sports holidays
This year's long, warm periods with temperatures about five to ten degrees are unusual for Swedish mountainous regions during winter time. This is something that sports holidayrs who have applied to the ski resorts can notice.
– It has been very mild and warm for the season, it looks more like Easter holidays than sports holidays in the mountains, says Mattias Tarestad, avalanche expert at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
According to The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's avalanche forecast service there is a moderate risk of avalanches in the southern parts of the mountains. Wet snow can mean avalanche danger and one should pay attention if the snow lacks bearing capacity. Sports holidayrs who apply for steep rides in terrain and off -piste should be extra vigilant, says Mattias Tarestad.
The mild weather has meant that there is very little snow for the season in the southern parts of the mountain chain where many go on sports holidays, he says. Jämtland County Administrative Board has also warned For snow shortages and very poor conditions on state winter trails in Jämtland and Härjedalen.
However, high up in the mountains and in the northern mountain regions, such as the national border, it is not a lack of snow.
– Locally, there is a huge snow, but in general there is snow in the mountains for different types of sports holiday activities, even though it is less than normal, says Mattias Tarestad.
