On Wednesday, the federal police will hold a flash marathon for the 22nd time. Extra speed is checked for 24 hours. With us, but also in the rest of Europe, you run twice as much chance of being flashed.

In the previous flash marathon, in November 2024, more than 3 percent of the controlled drivers were flashed. 56 driving licenses were also withdrawn. Earlier, in April 2024, twice as many drivers (6 percent) drove too fast. The police hope that the trend will continue. « The fewer drivers we catch, the better, » it sounds.

Read too. Soon 1,000 km highway will be under route control, and we can actually be happy with that

On Wednesday from 6 a.m. all available speed cameras are used and extra checks will be made at excessive speed until the next day. Both on municipal roads and on regional and highways. « The announced action has the main goal of encouraging drivers to moderate their speed and to adhere to the permitted maximum speed anytime and anywhere. Exaggerated speed is still one of the main causes of traffic accidents, » says the spokesperson for the federal police.

More than 20 countries in Europe participate in the flash marathon.

The flash marathon not only takes place with us. More than twenty European countries participate in this Speed Marathonorganized by Roadpol, the European Roads Policing Network.

To vote

In many other European countries, the police involve the general public and they can vote where there is to be flashing. With us, the federal police did that years ago. Via the IkFlitsmee.be website, citizens could then pass on dangerous points or roads where there is far too fast.

In all participating European countries together, 150,000 speed violations were registered in just 24 hours during the previous campaign. « According to recent data, there are more than 25,000 road deaths in Europe every year, and driving too fast is an important factor in many of these cases. The speed limits are not for nothing, » says Jana Peleskova of the Czech police and chairman of the Roadpol operational working group.
