« We would not be open if it was dangerous »

« It has been a very good attendance, a few thousand laps have been played with us in this almost one month that has been open, » says Helgi Dan Steinsson, Managing Director of Golf Club Grindavík, but attendance at the town’s golf course has become similar to 2023.

The golf course opened again after the winter of April 12, but Helgi says that everything has been brilliant.

« There has been a lot of riots and a big increase in the club, especially in people from the Reykjarvík area. That way we can’t complain. »

People were scared to meet

Asked how the attendance is compared to the disaster that began in Grindavík 10 November 2023 says Helgi:

« We are almost on par in the number of members and are crawling into these figures that we were in 2023 over guests who are coming to us. People are ready to come. »

He says there is a change from the summer last year, but then people have been sneaked about coming and little traffic around the stadium.

« We managed to open the stadium on June 12 last year after he received this view that was needed to open, but it was still not enough to get people on the spot, that everything had been thoroughly examined. »

Helgi Dan Steinsson, Managing Director of Golf Club Grindavík.

Negative publicity had an effect

Asked what could cause people to be ready to come now Helgi mentions that a lot of negative publicity about the situation in Grindavík a year ago has probably had an impact.

« There seems to be some little change in people and people are ready to take the hit and come, » says Helgi, adding that guests who have finally come after not having dared it for some time say the same:

« When they see that it is all good, they don’t understand why they haven’t just come to us a long time ago. »

The golfers are nothing frightened then?

« No no, from time to time! There is nothing to fear here. We would have nothing open if it was dangerous. »

« It will be a great celebration »

When asked, Helgi is expected to move more life into town this summer when Grindvikings get on a summer vacation and can then visit the town to a greater extent. Until then, there is still plenty to do.

« Now we are fully preparing for a football game that will be on Saturday.

This is the first home game in Grindavík in 18 months and the anticipation accordingly.

« We are very much looking forward to it, there is a great atmosphere for Grindvikings to attend the stadium and there will be a great celebration here on Saturday. »
