« We thought it was over twice »
Francis was in the hospital for 38 days. There was a very serious collapse twice. The doctors were convinced that this could be the end. And yet – as prof. Alfieri – « a miracle happened ».
The Holy Father went to the clinic on February 14 because of pneumonia. At some point there was an acute bronchma and deep shortness of breath. – We saw tears in the eyes of those who have been with him for years – reports the doctor. – We had to decide: to withdraw and let us go or fight to the end.
The decision was made by the Pope himself
« We don’t give up. Do everything, » said the Pope. And so it happened. Intensive treatment was used, despite the risk of damage to other organs. Francis all the time kept conscious, the strength of the spirit and – surprising – a sense of humor.
– He knew he might not survive that night. But he asked him to tell him the truth – says Alfieri. – He is a man who suffers but does not give up. And which gives strength to others.
One more crisis
When the situation began to improve, there was another threat. The Pope choked while eating, which threatened with death or serious complications. – We thought it would not work this time. And yet he also left it.
Pizza for staff
Just a few days later, Franciszek moved around the ward, he looked into the patients and offered pizza staff. – I’m still alive. When do we go home? He joked.
In an interview with « Corriere della Sera » prof. Alfieri says directly: The situation was almost hopeless twice. – But the whole world prayed. And maybe it just gave him strength. And his head? This is a fifty -year -old head – he adds with a smile.
Return to the House of Saint Marta
On Sunday, March 23, the Holy Father left the Gemelli hospital. Earlier – emaciated, tired, but with a smile – he appeared in the window and greeted the crowd of faithful who were constantly praying for his health. It was enough to look and bless you.
Now Francis is in the House of Saint Marta. Doctors recommend him at least two months of rest. Return to full strength must take place in peace, without rush and a busy plan of the day.
