We sell for free in Bulgaria

Negative energy prices in the market. We sell for free in Bulgaria

The market price of electricity is negative on Monday, between 12.00-16.00, according to OPCOM data, the energy exchange operator. It also reaches -6 MW. It is an united, rare situation, but I went through this. Last year, in the middle of summer, there were such situations. Now, however, we are still far from summer, but here are negative prices. This happens because of two factors.

First of all, it is the clear sky in almost all Romania. We have a very high production of photovoltaic energy, both from the photovoltaic parks and from the dispatchers. Over 1,500 MW, instant consumption at noon, the solar sector being, during this interval, the first producer of the country. Photovoltaic energy is the cheapest, being subsidized by all consumers, through the system of « green » certificates. Secondly, we have a small consumption, around 5,000 MW, because we are in a holiday interval. From these conditions, there is no internal demand for all this photovoltaic energy, especially since it is largely in the opportunity market, not in long -term contracts.

Thus, practically our solar energy producers give up the energy of consumers in Bulgaria for free, but they have nothing to do, because the energy produced, cannot be stored (we do not yet have major storage units), so we have to consume somewhere. If he has no place here, he goes to Bulgaria.

Conventional energy sources are much subcapacity, with the power plants barely « moving ». 200 in gas and about 500 MW in coal. It means practically nothing, since we have a functional installed capacity of about 1,500 MW in coal and 1,800 MW in gas capabilities. 700 MW of 3,300 MW assumes we have just over 20% of the power of power plants,

The only source that works normally is the nuclear. The Cernavoda nuclear power plant cannot be stopped and started depending on the market conditions. The reactors must operate in the tape, which is why most of the nuclear production is sold in long -term contracts.
