The most controversial measure of the new German government is the tightened controls at the border. Does the use already have an effect-or is it more of a PR campaign?
No. The basic problem in the European Union is poor external border protection. But because we want to know who comes to us, we will temporarily continue the border controls to this extent. This should not be a permanent measure: Our hope lies in the common European asylum system (GEAS), which must be implemented by all EU countries in one year. The illegal migration to Germany is currently still too high. This is particularly noticeable in the social infrastructure, because there is a lack of kindergarten places and apartments, for example, where people could be accommodated. We must not forget that almost a million refugees from Ukraine have come to us since the Russian attack. All of this has meant that the German municipalities have long been at the limit. Therefore, we can only let migrants into the country who actually have a prospect of asylum.
You cannot find out if people are rejected directly on the border without checking the asylum application.
The probability that someone can stay depends heavily on nationality: 99 percent people from Kosovo are rejected. If we have the common asylum system, there will be quick procedures at the EU’s external border that clarifies this question.
Is this the prerequisite that German border controls are lifted again?
