We import more gas while production decreases
The production of natural gas of Romania was, in the first four months of 2025, of over 2,532 million tonnes of oil equivalent, with 36,800 TEP below that of the similar period of last year (minus 1.4%), according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
On the other hand, between January-April 2025, natural gas imports increased by 72.5% (plus 358,000 TEP) compared to the same period of the previous year, up to 851,700 tonnes of oil equivalent.
According to the estimates of the National Commission for Strategy and Forecast (CNSP), natural gas production would increase, by 2027, with an average annual rate of 1.7%. Thus, in the last forecast of the energy balance, for 2025 a natural gas production of 7.79 million TEP (plus 1.5%) was estimated, for 2026 one of 7.907 million TEP (plus 1.5%) and for 2027 a natural gas production of 8.176 million TEP (plus 3.4%).
Regarding imports, a reduction tendency is expected, with a more pronounced rate on the horizon of 2027 (minus 6%), in accordance with the advancement of production, by entering new capacities, but also taking into account the transit to external markets.
