« We do not reject any hypothesis »: Spain seeks answers after losing 80% of electricity
Spain had recovered nearly 99% of its electricity supply early this morning, the day after the 15 gigawatts disappeared from the power supply for 5 seconds on Monday and left millions without electricity on the Iberian Peninsula and in parts of France.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said almost the same that there is no indication of a cyberattack, citing Spain as a source of the problem. Spain saw him in the connection with France, but with the statement by the national operator Red Eléctrica confirmed that the root cause was on her network.
For comparison, the five Nuclear power plants of Spain have a total installed capacity of 7.4 gigawatts-twice less than the fluctuation on the network after the disappearance of the 15 gigs, corresponding to experts (hence Sanchez’s claim) of 60% of the consumption of electricity at the time of the incident, 12:33. This hesitation excludes the connection with France and leads to a collapse of the system.
The country is trying to return to the normal rhythm, but the recovery will take some time.
Not all problems are solved
By 6 o’clock local (7 Bulgarian) time, Red Eléctrica announced that 99% of the electricity was restored and all substations already had voltage.
- At the same time, this does not mean the end of the crisis that paralyzed Spain on Monday. Hundreds of people spent the night at the station hoping that they could catch a train.
- The capacity of some urban and intercity networks remained incomplete in Madrid in the morning, Catalunya stopped her because of the instability of the electrical service.
- Air traffic control centers have regained 100% of the capacities.
- Nuclear power plants have stopped the extraordinary regime.
- At 10 am, however, there was still no electricity in individual municipalities.
- In some autonomous areas schools will open Today, but without training classes, parents who are at work and will not be home can leave their children at school in Madrid, Estremadura, Murcia, Valencia, La Rioha, Castila-La Mancha and Galicia.
The following is a new meeting of the National Security Council, which will head Prime Minister Sanchez and will include King Felipe Six.
Damage to the economy can amount to billions, although there is also warnings that the darkest forecast – for losses of 4.5 billion euros from the failed economic activity – are already rejected as exaggerated.
Only by 8 am Bulgarian time on the emergency telephone 112 were received 4858 signals related to the collapse, firefighters were sent 370 times. No serious incidents have been reported.

The opposition also accuses Sanchez of delaying the reaction and appeared five and a half after the crisis began.
The National Cryptological Center, which is subordinated to the National Intelligence Center, is content to assure that it is investigating the hypothesis of a cyber. Spain has become one of the countries with the most registered serious attacks per year.
Authorities are currently urging any speculation to be avoided while looking for the cause, especially given the large -scale coordination that would require such an endeavor for a national collapse in the highly segmented electrical network.
