We didn’t even come to refuel

The classic sedan has had its day? That would be a shame, because more sustainable than in the Mercedes E220D can only be mastered on the train.

It could hardly be much more traditional: limousine in the classic three box design (front car, occupant cabin, rear area), a diesel engine under the long bonnet. And a big star at the front. This is the E-Class, as they have been promoting managing directors, department heads and taxi passengers for many decades (so-called since 1993)-familiar, solid and not necessarily what our German friends would call an eye-catcher.

But expectations are crumbling at this point, because when the latest iteration of the series progresses, we see an almost irritatingly beautiful car that is very likely to be eyed. For almost five meters, design boss Gorden Wageners statement unfolds that a limousine is still or can still be a valid format – even if the classic in times of the SUV.

Business and elegance

With its aerodynamic efficiency (CW = 0.23), the new E-Class does not even have to hide from its fully electric equivalent-which, as an EQE, does not matter as well as an EQE. What the Stromer lacks in clarity in the expression does the E-Class wears like a custom suit: business elegance without applying thick. In addition, much better than fades black or gray: the metallic paint in this greenish, shimmering iconocilator is everything it takes to extravagance.

The question of whether a diesel engine in these areas is still permissible or contemporary does not arise: because there is no better drive for a car of the variety. Regrettable in this context: that Mercedes also belonged to the circle of diesel tricks; The abdication to circumvent a proper exhaust gas cleaning was called thermal window.

To save honor, one could open with this unit: up to date, the energy consumption, meticulously cleaned the exhaust gas, the signal of self -made – more than four cylinders and almost 200 hp do not have to be. With slightly over 1000 kilometers of range, the E220D of petrol stations continues really long.

The right measure of electrification, here through a 17 kW machine, helps the two-liter engine from the speed basement and lets it rest when it is not used, when sailing, maneuvering and rolling up to the intersection. It is by no means as before, because instead of a starter, a belt generator makes the four -cylinder purr.

Consumption close to the standard value

Acoustically, the diesel is so subtle that you like to hear the remaining, far away sounding hum. Especially if the joy of shooting can be sparked in the sporting rating. We closed around five and a half liters of consumption; If you put it on it, you shouldn’t have a lot of effort to achieve the standard value of 4.9 liters. Before you also use the connector hybrid that is also offered and load 300 kilograms of additional weight, you should calculate that exactly. Diesel is unchanged, especially on the long -haul, the domain of the car anyway.

No more taxis

Two centimeters more wheelbase than with the predecessor contribute to space, of which the taxi passenger, which nowadays has to fold into the rear of Japanese crossover, can only dream. But with his 100 years of taxi past, Mercedes has completed. In the E220D you can examine the form of luxury that should turn instead – preferably on the steering wheel. A high level of comfort is the possibility of parking the tempon reserve on the large screen with a touch.
