We celebrate Europe Day
The Day of Europe is celebrated, every year, on May 9, the historical moment of the ‘Schuman Declaration’, a crossroads that constituted the beginning of European integration and cooperation for peace and unity, is shown on https://europeday.europa.eu/.
75 years ago, on May 9, 1950, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman (1948-1952), proposed the placement of coal and steel production under the control of a common authority, thus avoiding a new military conflict between the nations of Europe, according to the site. https://european-union.europa.eu/. The proposal, known as the ‘Schuman Declaration’, is considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union.
On May 5, 2025, the management office of the European Parliament decided to establish the European Merit Order, the first European distinction granted by an EU institution, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration and Europe Day, notes https://www.europarl.europa.eu/.
On the occasion of Europe Day 2025 there will be numerous events in the EU Member States and worldwide, bringing together citizens from all social categories. The EU institutions will open their doors and invite citizens to visit their premises, discover their activity and get involved in a wide range of educational and entertainment activities.

In 1950, the nations of Europe were still making efforts to remove the disastrous consequences of World War II, which ended five years ago, looking for ways to avoid another war. They came to the conclusion that by jointly putting the production of coal and steel (according to the statement), a possible war between France and Germany, historical rivals, ‘it would be not only inconceivable, but also from a material point of view’, notes https://european-union.europa.eu/.
On April 18, 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (CECO) between Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. On March 25, 1957, these states signed the treaties in Rome, which instituted the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (what, today Euratom). Both the Treaty of Rome and the Treaty that entered into force on January 1, 1958.
