Washington is considering stopping negotiations about peace between Ukraine and Russia

If no progress is made in the negotiations with Russia and Ukraine about an end of the war, the United States may give up their peace attempts.

That is what the American Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said on Friday morning in Paris. « We will not continue for months with these efforts, » said Rubio. According to him, the US government wants to « decide within a few days » whether a ceasefire is « feasible in the coming weeks. » If that is not the case, « then we have other priorities that we want to focus on, » said Rubio. He said that Trump put « a lot of time and energy » into the negotiations about Ukraine. « This is important, but there are many other very important things that require just as much, if no more attention. »

In recent weeks, the Americans say they have tried to come up with a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but that has hardly yielded anything, in particular because Moscow does not make any sets to stop the war. On the contrary: the number of Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities has increased in recent months, resulting in tens of deaths.

File for thirty days

In recent weeks, the Americans had various discussions with representatives of the governments of Russia and Ukraine. Last month, Ukraine agreed to a proposal for a file for thirty days. When the Americans then started a conversation with the Russians, Moscow set a whole list of conditions that must be met. Russia still does not agree.

President Putin has announced that the « random causes » of « the conflict » must be tackled before it can come to peace with Ukraine. Putin, who started his war against Ukraine eleven years ago with, among other things, the intake of Crimea, believes that Ukraine should not become a member of NATO, that the country should no longer get foreign weapons and that no foreign troops should be stationed in Ukraine. Furthermore, Moscow wants the government of President Volodyymyr Zensky to get off.

Rubio spoke for a long time in Paris with representatives of the Ukrainian government and a number of European allies from KYIV. At the beginning of next week, the people involved will again meet in London.

President Trump has said several times in the past year that he will stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. Since he returned to the White House three months ago, he mainly tried to get ties with President Putin. Trump even blamed Ukraine several times. At the beginning of March he stopped military aid for the Ukrainian forces to force Kyiv to the negotiating table. Ukraine then quickly agreed with an American proposal for a ceasefire.

Although Trump has said a few times that he is dissatisfied with the Russian attitude and the ongoing war acts, Trump has never committed consequences. For example, he refused to condemn a Russian rocket attack on the city of Soemy last weekend. 35 citizens were killed in that attack. According to Trump there had been « a mistake. »

On Friday morning, Russia attacked the cities of Charkiv and Dnipro with rockets with cluster munitions. A person was killed in Charkiv, seventy citizens were injured.
