Wants to increase the number of images from Iceland on Wikipedia

Eysteinn Guðni Guðnason amateur photographer recently posted a post in the Bakland tourism group on Facebook, urging people to publish photos it takes on his travels this summer, on Wikipedia, of places in Iceland that have no picture.

Eystein compiled those places in Iceland that own a Wikipedia page but no image and created a map on Google Earth. That map can be accessed here.

Eystein claims to have created the card for himself but then found a way to share it with others.

Eystein intends to take the points off the card when they have received a picture on Wikipedia. His goal is that in the end there will be no point on the map.

« Photos say more than a thousand words »

According to Eystein, Wikipedia pages can be quite a landmark. It adds both Wikipedia users’ experience that pictures are on the pages, but also the holders of tourists who are looking at which places they want to visit. « Pictures say more than a thousand words, » says Eysteinn when asked why he thinks it is important that Wikipedia pages have pictures.

However, he says it is also fun to see pictures he has taken in new places. Eystein himself has published about 500-600 photos on Wikipedia. They have gone beyond, as they are under the so-called Credit Commons « system. He takes an example that a picture from him was used on a Russian brochure.

However, Eystein points out that it is avoided to publish pictures of new buildings on Wikipedia. New buildings are often copyrighted and often complex rules around them. It can therefore be complicated to publish pictures of recent structures.

Great hugs on pictures

Eysteinn says he himself has published pictures and written articles on Wikipedia and has, for example, written one of these about this project that can be seen here. However, he writes specifically about places in Iceland in Wikipedia. He noticed some time ago that many pictures were missing of places, people and events in Iceland. He mentions June 17 as an example of an event that has no image on his Wikipedia page.

The points on Eystein’s map, over places missing images on Wikipedia, are distributed equally across the country. He says he missed good pictures of urban areas and mentions Skagaströnd, Eskifjörður, Vopnafjörður but also Papey, Leirá and Reydarvatn.

Eystein encourages people to have the card at hand on their travels this summer and post pictures of their travels on Wikipedia.
