The number of people who are in custody has increased significantly in recent years. In 2024, nearly 3,700 people were locked up pending expulsion. With a more restrictive migration policy, the need is also estimated to be greater – in 2029, 1,000 places on detention will be available, compared with just over 560 today.

The government is now proposing that personnel should, among other things, be able to visit the bodies at a lower level of suspicion than today. The room’s rooms must be examined, and a general entry control must be established if necessary.

The reason, explains Johan Forssell (M), is reports that both weapons and drugs occur at Swedish detention. The measures must be those that the Migration Board itself has asked for.

– For example, it is about knives and other dangerous objects that enter the repository. It is also about drugs that have nothing there to do of course. This leads to an uncertain environment for anyone staying at detention, says Johan Forssell.

– Compulsory measures such as body visitation can increase the feeling of powerlessness in the detention, and affect the confidence in the staff, she says.

In addition, Nina Piquer points out that people who are deprived of liberty risk developing mental illness. If the security procedures become more extensive, it may mean that the feeling of being locked up is strengthened.

– We now see that these proposals include compulsory and control measures that actually have major consequences for personal integrity. The development of the repository is in a direction to become more prison -like.

He believes that if Sweden is to continue on the track, with more people being expelled, detention will play an important role.

– It must have consequences if you choose not to cooperate with authorities and do not follow democratically made decisions. A cornerstone of a regulated immigration is that people who have been rejected on their asylum application actually return home. It is important for us to help those who have protection reasons.
