Hans Matthijs (65) from Liedekerke saved a deer from the Dender on Wednesday morning, near Denderleeuw. The man had noticed the animal and did not hesitate for a moment to make it. « In my one hand I had the leash with my dog, while with my other hand I pulled the deer out of the water. »
It had to be a quiet walk with his dog, but around 10.15 am it turned out completely differently. On the path along the Dender, Hans suddenly noticed a sound that came from the water. « When I went closer to watch, I saw that a deer had ended up in the Dender, » says Hans.
The animal could not get out of the water independently, so Hans decided to roll up his sleeves. « It has swam back and forth a few times, until it swam here along the side of the water between a wooden beam. That way I was able to attach it to his horns to lift him out of the water. »

Once on the dry, the deer immediately walked into the forest. « I was happy, » Hans continues. « In my one hand I had stuck the leash with my dog, while with my other hand I pulled the deer out of the water. In the meantime I had also notified the police and they in turn notified the fire brigade. When the fire brigade arrived, it was already out of the water. »

According to Hans, the animal was already very tired. « If the deer should have swimming for longer, it would certainly have drowned. » That is why the attentive animal sader calls to take measures that in the future animals that end up in the Dender can get out of the water themselves. « A staircase for animals on the side of the Dender can help with this, because from here to Ninove, the Dender is defined with concrete, so that animals cannot possibly get out of the water themselves, and eventually drown. » (BSB)
