Waiting for calls in Olafsfjordur

The cumulative rainfall in Olafsfjordur in recent days is about twice as high as in the Ravel which happened there in 2021 and caused much damage. The sewerage system in the town has proved to be successful in the storm, but pumps have been needed from the lowest points of the town.

There has been enormous rainfall in the North since last night, but the yellow warning of the Icelandic Meteorological Office in the area is still in effect.

« There has been a rainfall since yesterday. We in the fire brigade have actually been waiting to get a call -out project and it arrived at one o’clock today, » says Jóhann K. Jóhannsson, fire chief in Fjallabyggð, in a conversation with mbl.is and adds:

« We have been notified from one house that started to flow in and it was responded to, but the pumping projects we are in town are basically at the lowest point in Olafsfjordur.

Go through the sewer system

There is still a lot of rainfall in the area and also a lot of water flows from the mountain that passes across the town. Asked if he expects further calls tonight, Jóhann says that something should be done with the evening and that sewage cuts have proved to be successful so far.

Then he says the fire brigade was well prepared for the rain. « We went through the sewerage system, all the expansion and pumping wells yesterday and the previous day, because the forecast did not look good.

It must be said that the sewer system has proved successful, but Jóhann points out that the rainfall is considerable in historical context.

« If we compare this to the floods that occurred here in October 2021, meteorologists told us that the cumulative rainfall now was almost twice as much than then. »

In the cave in question, roads, meadows, fences and power lines were damaged.
