VVD MP Roelien Kamminga new mayor of Groningen
VVD MP Roelien Kamminga does not finish her period as a member of the House of Representatives and will become the new mayor of Groningen instead. The chairman of the confidential committee announced this on Monday evening, writes RTV Noord.
« I would normally not make it a habit to leave before the period is finished, » Kamminga told Anp news agency about leaving her seat early. « This was the position that I always thought: if it is released, then I will go for it. »
The 46-year-old Kamminga was born in Zuidbroek in Groningen. She studied English literature and international relations. Then she started working at the Ministry of the Interior, including as head of public order, intelligence and safety. At the same ministry she also worked as a program director to accelerate the reinforcement operation of Huizen in Groningen.
Kamminga succeeds acting mayor Mirjam van ‘t Veld (CDA). She took over from Koen Schuiling (VVD), after he left office early, because he says he would no longer have enough energy for the job. »
