Vulkan Kanlaon broke out again in Philippines: 4000 meter high ash cloud

The Vulkan Karlaon on the Philippines broke out again. From the outbreak, pictures and videos on social media show that in the moments directly around the eruption and show how the Berg spit out a large ash cloud. According to the Filipino Institute for Vulcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the outbreak occurred at shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday morning (local time). The « moderately explosive eruption » took 56 minutes. The volcano had broken out a few months ago.

The gray, voluminous ash cloud, which was created on Tuesday, rose to up to 4000 meters above the volcano chimney, such as Phivolcs on its website (external link) and announced on X. In the minutes and hours after the outbreak, the cloud pulled towards the west and southwest.

During the eruption Rumpel noises were acoustically heard from the Kanlaon, so -called pyroclastic density flows fell down the slopes of the volcano. They spread around the crater in an area of about one kilometer. In addition, some large chunks of rock were thrown out of the chimney. The outbreak also caused fires in the vegetation near the crater, as explained by Phivolcs.

In some places in the region around the volcano, a slight ashfall occurred as a result of the Kanlaon outbreak. In addition, a slight smell of sulfur in parts of the region was perceived by people.

Alarm level 3 on the Kanlaon in the Philippines: Further outbursts could follow

After eruption there is alarm level 3 (for magmatic unrest) on the Kanlaon (on a scale up to 5). This means that at Phivolcs it is explained that similar explosive eruptions can follow on the outbreak of Tuesday morning or even lead to lavaeruptions, which then result in lava flows and lava lonts.

As the State Institute reports, the municipalities should be evacuated around the crater within a radius of six kilometers because there is a risk of pyroclastic density flows, stone chips, ashfall and other threats. In addition, civil flights near the volcano are to be avoided.

Like the newspaper Manila bulletin reports, the fires around the crater are currently spreading. The fire initially only affected the forested area of the volcano, but, depending on the wind conditions, could also spread to an adjacent residential area. The head of the Canlaon City fire station, Marlou Abrenica, told the newspaper that the fire will be advised on possible measures and steps to combat fire. At the moment you cannot react to the fire because you cannot enter the danger zone around the crater. « It is very dangerous, » he said.

The Vulkan Kanlaon is located on the island of Negros, which is located in the south of the Philippines and is one of the largest of the islands of the Pacific State. The Philippines are on the Pacific Fire Ring, a volcano beam in the Pacific. The country has 22 active volcanoes. Most recently, the Kanlaon broke out in December. Tens of thousands of people had to be evacuated as a result. Many of them are still housed in evacuation centers. According to the current outbreak, there are further evacuations.
