Vox rejects that Spain participates in a European peace mission in Ukraine | Spain

Vox spoke on Monday for the first time against the participation of Spain in a European military mission in Ukraine, once a peace agreement or A high fire between kyiv and Moscow. The spokesman for the Ultra Formation, José María Fúster, said at a press conference that his party « would never send troops to Ukraine » and that Spanish soldiers « must be where they have to be: in the defense of sovereignty (Spanish) and fulfilling the constitutional mandate. » Actually, this argument would also serve to reject the participation of the Spanish Armed Forces in any of the 16 international missions in which they are present.

This change in attitude occurs one day after, this Sunday, several hundred people concentrated in front of the Congress in Madrid convened by the influencer of extreme right Rubén Gisbert To ask for neutrality from Spain in the Ukraine conflict under the motto: « It is not our war. »

Fuster insisted on the main argument that Vox has used so far to attack Pedro Sánchez's position on Ukraine: that what the government should do is stop financing Vladimir Putin's army through Russian gas purchases, which have increased substantially in recent years. Actually, purchases are not made by the State, but private companies, taking advantage of the existence in Spain of numerous regasification plants and the low price of Russian liquefied gas (LNG). The government cannot prevent Spanish companies from buying Russian gas, since the European Union has not agreed against it, as it has done with coal or crude.

Vox's rejection of Spain's participation in a possible European mission, which will only be launched if there is a peace or fire agreement, adds to Podemos, which has made it clear that « it will never support the shipment of troops to Ukraine. » The Spanish participation in such a mission, whatever its format (military observers, instructors or deterrence) will require the approval of the congress, according to its article 4.2 the National Defense Law.
