Vox instructs their public positions to uncheck the tariffs without criticizing Trump | Spain

The 20% tariff that Donald Trump imposed on all European products, including the Spaniards, has put Vox in an impossible position: the Ultra Party has some of its largest electoral dugs Among the sectors most punished by the commercial war undertaken by its main international ally; such as agricultural, with wine and oil as emblematic products. To try to minimize the damage caused to his image by the onslaught of the new White House tenant against Spanish interests and prevent criticism from arising from Trump from his own ranks, Vox has distributed an argument among his public and organic positions to which the country has had access.

« We are against Trump’s tariffs, » the internal document begins as a Excusatio non petitaas if possible the opposite: that a Spanish party was in favor of taxing national products. It is the only critical phrase against the US president that appears throughout the document, since the rest of the argument is dedicated to loading “popular and socialists, which reject Trump’s tariffs while applauding the European green pact and the 2030 Agenda 2030 ″. Or against“ Brussels bureaucrats (which) criticize what Trump does (but) do nothing to defend our products ”.

Instead of denouncing the US president, Vox instructs his spokesmen to carry European institutions, who « have approved delusional laws » and « have been unable to negotiate with the Trump administration. » To heat this idea in public opinion, the text insists machaconally insists that the fault of tariffs is not the one who imposes them, but of « the bureaucrats of Brussels, popular and socialist, (who) have not done anything to avoid them or alleviate them (…) have neither dialogued with Trump. »

On March 16, Abascal assured that the best way to face the threat of tariffs by the new US administration was not to become “the anti-trump paladins, which is what both Sánchez and Feijóo are doing. Who is going to get rid of the tariffs in Europe seems to be Giorgia Meloni because, in the words of Mr. Trump, he liked him. Actually, Meloni’s Italy, as a member of the EU, has received the same tariffs as Sánchez’s Spain.

The argumentary of the Ultra Formation includes attacks on the president of the Government for his next trip to China, to the PP for « insulting the new president of the United States » and the media for « brutally attacking Vox » when their tuning with Trump stands out. The conclusion is that « Spain needs a strong leader (…) who defends Spain from diplomacy with good international allies. »

According to the document, that leader is none other than Santiago Abascal, « the only Spanish and European leader who has traveled to the United States publicly express his opposite position to any measure of international trade that harms Spanish products. » It refers to the two visits that, within one month, made the president of Vox to Washington, the first to attend Trump’s possession, on January 20; and the second, to intervene in the Constitution of Conservative Political Action (CPAC), on February 20.

In response to the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who accused him of maintaining a “collusion silence” with Trump’s tariffs, Abascal has broadcast a message on the social network X on Thursday in which he emphasizes that he “has spoken against tariffs in Washington, which is where we have to talk”.

Actually, rather than speaking « against » tariffs, what Abascal did was express his desire that Trump would not impose them. After defending the new tenant of the White House, from whom he said that “they insist on the enemy of Europe because it puts the interests of the Americans in the first place”, Abascal added in his speech before the conservative conference that the problem of Europeans “are not the tariffs announced by the United States, which hopefully they do not arrive. The true tariffs are the green pact, the abusive taxes and the regulation Woke”That is, the EU standards and European governments. That was its only reference to the commercial taxes prepared by the new US administration.

On February 14, before traveling to Washington, Abascal recorded a message that insisted that « the threat to our field, our industry, our energy sovereignty, our exports, does not come from Donald Trump, comes from the policies that the Popular Party and the socialists have agreed in Brussels. » More recently, on April 2, he was comprehensive with the measures against Trump’s free trade. « There are already tariffs between US and Europe products and are more harmful to the US than for Europe. How are I not going to respect or understand that any international leader defends their interests? I understand it. Sometimes it goes against our interests, as in this case, » he added.

In recent months, Vox has promoted the image of Abascal as a leader with international projection, especially after his election as president of the European Party Patriots, promoted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and with the national regrouping of Le Pen as the majority partner.

In May of last year, after the recognition of the Palestinian State by Spain, Abascal traveled to Israel and met with the head of the Government, Benjamín Netanyanhu, who, according to the Ultra Party, then started the commitment that, in retaliation for the decision of Pedro Sánchez, Israel would not take any measure that would affect “Spanish sovereignty” Basque Country promoted by some deputies of the KNESET. This time it does not appear that Abascal has used its relationship with Trump to exercise a task of good offices in defense of Spanish products.
