Volvo reveals its electric business class for the first time in Luxembourg
The ceremonial car in the Volvo Scandia store in Bonneweg already ceremoniously gives an idea: the star of the day is not exactly a compact cruiser with exactly five meters in length. With the ES90, Volvo continues to drive the electrification of its product program and at the same time puts the bar a bit higher: The fully electric sedan wants to be a class of the brand in several ways, the brand’s new flagship. It not only combines the elegance of a limousine, the adaptability of a flow rear and the spacious interior and the greater ground clearance of an SUV. The Sweden, now sixth e-model, also wants to be the computing vehicle that Volvo has ever developed and consolidate the position of the brand as industry leader in software-defined vehicles.
Family duel under power: Volvos EX90 against Polestar 3
As the first model of the Swedes, the new massive Volvo has two processors of the tech giant Nvidia, which control important processes in the car at ultra -fast speed. Their high computing power – 508 trillion operations per second – manages, among other things, security systems and battery management. Your debut is also celebrating the 800-volt technology in the ES90. It is intended to charge faster, a better overall performance and more efficiency. According to Volvo, the new model can gain 300 kilometers of 350 kW fast charging stations in just ten minutes.
Like the SUV flagship ex90, the newcomer is based on the corporate own spa2 architecture. Both models also use the so-called « Superset Tech Stack », which consists of a single set of hardware and software modules and systems. Thanks to faster « Over-the-Air » updates, Volvo wants to constantly optimize the car and meanwhile keep the entire life cycle on the last state of the art. As a real Volvo, the ES90 also wants to meet all security standards that are based on 55 years of practice-oriented research by the designer and for whom a new era has already started with the EX90 thanks to the powerful Core Computing processors.
Even more security
The strong security cage, the latest retention systems and optimized deformation zones want to ensure the highest level of passive security. The active security systems are supported by a number of sensors, including a lidar, five radars, seven cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors. They enable a view that, according to Volvo, goes beyond human reach and help to avoid collisions and a wide variety of dangerous situations.
In contrast to the electrical Volvo SUV EX90 with its even more angular design, the new premium sedan presents itself. However, the ES90 remains loyal to its brand identity. The seating position is slightly higher than usual and gives the driver a better view of the street. The flowing roof line is intended to contribute to an excellent aerodynamics. Unusually, the outborting for the camera and radar unit in the upper part of the windshield, which, as with the EX90, is more reminiscent of a driving school or a taxi. The rear, on the other hand, is unmistakable with its new C-shaped LED rear lights, which are supplemented by LED lamps in the rear window.
The large and wide tailgate facilitates the loading and unloading of the trunk, which offers a loading volume of manageable 424 liters. The three rear seats can be fitted individually; If you are all folded down, the loading volume increases to 1,256 liters. And under the front hood there is a 22 -liter stowa roof in which the charging cable can be accommodated, for example.
Sober, but functional
As expected, the space available in a comfortable cockpit is generous. The long wheelbase of 3.1 meters ensures business-like legroom for the second row passengers, which almost predestines the ES90 to the chauffeur vehicle. A large panoramic roof, which pulls a milky veil over the glass surface at the push of a button, lets natural light flow into the tidy interior and is intended to offer UV protection of up to 99.9 percent.
The Scandinavian, sober design continues to indicate the sound and focuses on functionality. The new generation’s infotainment system integrates Google Services. The 5G-compatible system provides all the relevant information on a 9-inch driver display and a head-up display. The central 14.5-inch display in the middle of the dashboard grants access to navigation, entertainment, air conditioning, telephone and much more. A new 3D view, supported by a 360-degree camera, wants to help in a confined space with maneuvering.
Strongest Volvo of all time
In the drives, the SUV counterpart is used as a model with its three variants. In performance, however, the electric motors in the ES90. The single rear engine with 245 kW (333 hp) and a maximum of 480 Newton meters is started. With his 92 kWh battery, he wants to create up to 650 kilometers (WLTP). The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h should be possible in 6.9 seconds.
For its double engine with a 106 kWh battery, the manufacturer is listed in 330 kW (449 hp) and 670 Nm in the data sheet. It should accelerate from zero to a hundred in 5.5 seconds. With the performance pack, the total output is even 500 kW (680 hp) and 870 Nm. And in just 4.0 seconds he wants to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. Both all -wheel drive variants consume 17.1 kWh/100 km and have a preliminary range of up to 700 kilometers (WLTP).
The new Volvo flagship should not be roled to the Luxembourg dealers until December 2025 and January 2026. In the basic equipment, the new e-volvo with rear-wheel drive then costs 71,837 euros. Almost 20,000 euros more are due for the top model with all -wheel drive and performance pack.
The « Luxembourg Word » was invited by Volvo for the performance.
