Vlaming bought more bio last year

The Fleming spent an average of 90 euros per head on organic products last year and bought an average of 28.3 times bio. That is an increase compared to the year before, according to figures announced in Sint-Truiden on Saturday during the kick-off of the ‘Bioweek’, in the presence of Flemish Minister of Agriculture Jo Brouns (CD&V).
The intention of the Bioweek is to strengthen the consumer consumer consumer by highlighting the benefits and the production process. Brouns opened the Bioweek at the Fruitbedrijf Jacobs in Sint-Truiden, where cherries, apples and pears are grown in an organic way. The plots are alternated and there are other trees and hedge plants on the cultivation grounds.
De Vlaming bought an average of 28.3 times organic last year, according to figures that were collected on behalf of the Flemish Center for Agro and Fisheries Marketing (VLAM). That is an increase of 8.6 percent compared to the year before. This mainly concerns vegetables, followed by fruit, dairy, meat, eggs, potatoes and bread, says VLAM CEO Filip Fontaine.
Turnover value
Minister Brouns spoke during the visit of the « 5 x 5 growth ambitions for Bio by 2027 ». That involves 5 percent of the agricultural area for organic production, an increase to 30,000 hectares. In addition, the turnover value of biological animal production must rise to 5 percent, at least 5 percent of farms must be bi -bias, the consumption of biological food must increase to 5 percent and organic food must be 5 percent of government catering.
During the Bioweek, which will run until 15 June, people can visit during open days with producers, processors and distributors. All activities are listed on www.bioeweek.be.
