Vlaams Belang has been holding a May 1 meeting for many years, often in symbolic places such as Vilvoorde following the closure of the Renault factory. This year Ninove was chosen, where Vlaams Belang with Guy D’Haeseleer has the first mayor due to the great success of Forza Ninove. In the most recent municipal elections, that party obtained the absolute majority in the latest municipal elections.
But D’Haeseleer has been struggling with heavy liver problems since the start of this month. On 3 April he was admitted to the hospital with a « severe and heavy form of hepatitis », an inflammation of the liver. He needs a liver transplant, but so far no suitable donor has been found.
« A May 1 celebration in Ninove, without our mayor is not a real May 1 celebration. That is why the big meeting will not take place this year, » announced party chairman Tom van Grieken on X. « We postpone the location and the celebration for a year. We wish Guy all the improvement and keep hoping for a complete recovery! »
Nevertheless, Vlaams Belang will transfer the message from the party in response to the Day of Labor on the eve of 1 May, with all the mandataries of the party, but lesser -scale.(BLG)
