Viennese election could bloom a challenge – Diepresse.com
Non-Austrian EU citizens who are entitled to vote at the district level receive differently colored envelopes than Austrians, their voices are counted separately. From a European law perspective, this appears problematic.
Each of the almost 265,000 EU citizens who are entitled to vote (non-Austrian with main residence in Vienna) will receive a different colored electoral coup on April 27. While the Austrians receive a blue envelope, the EU citizens entitled to vote receive yellow in accordance with § 62 Vienna’s municipal electoral regulations. After the election conclusion, these envelopes are sorted out unopened, collected in the district and counted together in the respective magistratic district office.
This count is only made separately on the day after the election. Your result is noted separately and can be clearly read from the public election data. In the previous elections, this « EU voting division result » was also actively presented by the magistrate. In public publications in the city of Vienna, voter turnout and different party preferences of the EU citizens living in Vienna are documented.
