Over the past five years, Vienna has set new standards in urban greenery through the « Goodbye Asphalt » initiative, transforming more than 85,000 square meters of public space. With an investment of 100m euros and the implementation of about three hundred projects in all city areas, the Austrian capital is actively adapted to climate change and becoming a more pleasant place to live.
As part of the « Goodbye Asphalt » initiative, the Austrian capital has implemented 344 projects over 85,000 square meters of public space over the past five years, setting a new record in the greenery.
The city has become significantly cooler and more pleasant for living – measures to adapt to climate change have been carried out in all Viennese city areas. In this way, 3,300 new trees were planted, nearly 2,200 square meters of water surfaces were arranged and about 2,745 benches were installed. The purpose of these comprehensive interventions is to mitigate the urban heat islands, increase the quality of life in public spaces and permanently improve the microclimate.
The main part of the initiative, funded with a total of 100 million euros, was a program that supported projects for removing asphalt, greening and cooling. According to the Vienna City administration, densely populated areas, as well as large areas, they have benefited from this, the international office of the city of Vienna in Zagreb said.
– In the future Vienna must oppose the climate crisis and remain pleasant to live – especially in summer, when one temperature record follows another. The best protection against heat provides green areas – and that is why we will continue to extend them intensively in the future. As part of the green offensive, over the past five years we have created almost 500,000 square meters of modern shaded green public space – and in the coming years we will add another 400,000 square meters. We must not forget the thousands of square meters of asphalt that have already been removed or removed – says Jurgen Chernochorski, a member of the Vienna climate.
