What needs to be done to keep graduates of local universities, but also to motivate smart minds from abroad to research research in Austria.

Rough 20 percent of the graduates of an Austrian university leave Austria after studying. Why is this quite high emigration rate? Can and should it be reduced at all?

For Michael Stampfer, managing director of the Vienna Science, Research and Technology Fund (WWTF), the circulation is particularly important. « It's about having many good minds in the country, not just Austrians, » he emphasizes. « But also about sending Austrians out into the world. » Accordingly, it is not only important to keep domestic scientists, but also to create attractive conditions for many of the smartest minds to come from. « Some of the best scientists in the country currently come from the USA, France, Spain and Southeast Europe. For the very good people, the time after postdoc is always a time of hiking, many find good conditions for this, apply to us or take a job, » says stampfer.
